Webinar Session 4: Clinical Decision Support - What it is and how it can improve medicine
Speakers: Annette L. Valenta, DrPH, Andrew D. Boyd, MD, Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences, College of Applied Health Sciences, and the Department of Medical Education, College of Education, University of Illinois at Chicago Host: Peter Eckart, IPHI
Purpose: Within Electronic Health Records, clinical decision support is heralded as one of the solutions to improve the quality of medicine. The idea behind the claim is that the national guidelines derived from evidence based medicine are embedded into the EHR to help inform physician decisions on the appropriate treatments for patients in the clinic, which can improve the outcomes. This lecture introduces physicians to the documented successes and failures of clinical decisions support systems from the published randomized control trials. Additional summaries from qualitative and other studies on clinical decision support will be described. The current grand challenges within clinical decision support systems will be discussed. From this knowledge, physicians should be able to:1. Judge the relative significance of specific clinical decision support reminders and the limitations of the reminders2. Integrate a single clinical decision support reminder into their own practice to increase concordance with national practice guidelines to meet CMS "Meaningful Use" guidelines3. Reflect on the success or failure of the reminder and the ability of the reminder to improve concordance with evidence based guidelines Intended Audience: Primary Care Physicians, Pediatricians, Family Medicine, Obstetricians-Gynecologists, and Internal MedicineIL-HITREC is headquartered at Northern Illinois University, with satellite offices in Chicago, DeKalb, Peoria, and Sauget.
